Future of Davlin campaign fund unclear

No one knows what will happen to Mayor Tim Davlin’s campaign fund, or just how big it might be.

On Monday, the day before he killed himself, Davlin filled out a form showing an amendment to his campaign committee’s organization statement. He signed it and then mailed the document to the Illinois State Board of Elections.

While the city grieved, a postal worker delivered the document to the state Board of Elections, where it was officially filed at 1:49 p.m. on Tuesday. The amendment was a routine matter: Under a change in state law, the type of committee that Davlin used to fund his mayoral campaigns won’t exist after Jan. 1, so the mayor changed categories to “candidate political committee.”

Davlin, who did not file for re-election, acted early — he had until Dec. 31 to make the change.
