Declare Your Independence from SuperPACs in Illinois
More than 400 SuperPACs at the federal level have raised over $200 million from special interest donors.
SuperPACs can accept unlimited contributions from corporations, unions, individuals, and politically active nonprofits--which are not required to disclose the sources of their funding. After amassing huge war chests, SuperPACs can spend as much as they please, in any manner they choose, to advocate for or against candidates.
Until recently, Illinois was free from the threat of locally run SuperPACs, but recent litigation has opened the door for these groups to influence local and state elections.
Earlier this year, ICPR fought to defend Illinois law, but citing a recent string of federal court rulings, U.S. District Court Judge Marvin Aspen ruled that he had no choice but to allow SuperPACs in Illinois’ state and local elections.
Illinois’ history of corruption is both long and embarrassing. The 2009 limits law, championed by ICPR addressed that problem, but SuperPACs once again allow donors to give unlimited funds to benefit chosen candidates. The latitude with which SuperPACs can be run and the negative messaging they bring into campaigns is damaging to our state.
SuperPACs open the door to greater corruption
and damage voters’ faith in the electoral system.
SuperPACs have received media coverage with increasing fervor as the 2012 presidential primary heats up. Even Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart have artfully illustrated the dangers to democracy that SuperPACs pose—but it’s no laughing matter. ICPR is dedicated to taking on the threat of SuperPACs that are forming to influence elections in Illinois.
Our Board of Directors has risen to the task of helping ICPR
match the efforts of special interests by committing to
match your donation, dollar for dollar, up to the first $15,000
until Independence Day, July 4, 2012.
Our Board members have truly answered the call, and we now ask you to do the same to curb the influence money has on our political system. Year by year we are working to make Illinois’ politics more transparent and accountable to voters. Illinois faces many challenges, as do we here at ICPR. We can do it, but we need your help.
ICPR will work to curb the influence of SuperPACs by pushing for increased transparency into their activities, advocating for stronger restrictions on coordination with political campaigns and doing the research to chronicle the influence of campaign cash on public policy.
Cleaning up Illinois politics will be hard, but supporting ICPR is easy. Just use the donation link on this page.
We encourage you to check with your employer to see if they offer matching gifts for contributions to 501(c)(3) organizations like ICPR and to direct your friends and family to www.ilcampaign.org and engage them in our work to improve Illinois government, and therefore, the quality of life for Illinois residents.
Help us make our state a model for the nation by creating a political system that is fair, honest, and free from the influence of special interests and SuperPACs.
