Rezko attorneys plead for his release before trial

CHICAGO - Antoin "Tony" Rezko is being housed in solitary confinement
in a federal South Loop jail, making it difficult for him to prepare
for his upcoming fraud trial, his attorneys said in a court filing
Tuesday.
The complaint by Rezko's lawyers came in an appeal to the 7th Circuit
U.S. Court of Appeals that seeks his release before his March 3 trial
at the Dirksen U.S. Courthouse.
U.S. District Judge Amy St. Eve jailed Rezko in late January after
prosecutors raised concerns the politically connected businessman was
a flight risk, citing a $3.5 million payment from Lebanon that he had
concealed from the court.
Rezko, a former adviser and top fundraiser for Gov. Rod Blagojevich,
is being kept by himself in the Metropolitan Correctional Center
because of safety concerns due to his status as a high-profile
defendant, according to his lawyers.
Rezko's attorneys said that the government had been aware of the $3.5
million payment since last spring, that Rezko had consulted lawyers on
the transaction and that much of the money was used to pay legal
bills.
