The Only Game in Town
Now that those pesky primaries are behind us, the legislature can claim centerstage for the next week (or two).  Whether or not political reform measures will pass both chambers in the same form remains very murky.  Both party's nominees for Governor have proposed ambitious reform packages.  And several legislators have filed substantive reform bills, including HB 5006/HB 743 (Coulson - Contribution limits), SB 1955/HB 671 (Raoul/Delgado; Judicial Public Financing), HB 4073/SB 2138 (Fritchey/DelValle; Pay to Play), HB 5765 (Fritchey - Lobbyist reform), SB1822(Ronan - Blagojevich's reform package) and SB 2953 (Garrett/Dillard; Inspector General Disclosure).  The remaining weeks of the Spring Session provide our public servants with an opportunity to push their plans forward.  Call the Blagojevich campaign at (773) 404-2006 and the Topinka campaign at (312) 346-5839 and tell them not to just talk about reform between now and November; while the legislature is in session, take this opportunity to pass it now.

Save the Date: May 10 in Chicago
Whatever happens in Springfield, we hope they're done by May 10th.  On that night, ICPR is hosting a fundraiser in Chicago.  We'll be honoring the work of Mike Lawrence, Director of the Paul Simon Public Policy Center, and former FCC Chair Newt Minow. Also, WBEZ personality Aaron Freeman will MC a short film festival of political campaign ads.  We know, campaign spots are often annoying, and we've seen them all, but some are noteworthy, even funny (in a ha-ha way, not a painful way) and we hope to highlight ads at their most entertaining.  Tickets are only $50; to register, go here.
