Gov. Blagojevich Pledges Amendatory Veto of Ethics Bill
Decrying the failure of the legislature to include an ethics commission in the recently passed ethics bill, the governor yesterday promised to issue an amendatory veto of HB 3412 when it reaches his desk. Should the legislature fail to approve his changes during the November veto session, he also pledged to hold them in special session through the holidays, if necessary.
ICPR and others in the reform community were greatly disappointed by the Senate's refusal to include ethics commissions in the bill. Together with our partners in the Illinois Campaign Reform Coalition, ICPR issued a statement, noting "We share the Governor's disappointment in the recent failure of legislation to create a system of ethics commissions and inspectors general, and we are encouraged by his desire to establish such an investigation and enforcement mechanism in state government."
Details of the governor's message, the Reform Coalition statement, and press coverage of the announcement are available on ICPR¹s website. Click here: ilcampaign.org/ethics.
