*City of Chicago Redistricting Hearings

After months of closed-door deliberations, Chicago aldermen are holding public hearings to hear from residents about the ward redistricting proposals which have been introduced. At Tuesday's standing-room only hearing in Lincoln Park, ICPR examined what steps the City Council had already taken toward fulfilling its pledge to open up the remapping process to the public, and what we are still waiting for aldermen to do. Read ICPR's testimony on the process and visit the Council's special redistricting website to view the proposals, contribute to the discussion, and find information about additional hearings.

* Task Force Sends Public Financing Report to Gov. Quinn and Legislature

The Campaign Finance Reform Task Force, created by state law to monitor implementation of changes to the Illinois Election Code, ended 2011 by adopting a report on public financing of elections. The report, available here, outlines many pitfalls that arise when candidates are dependent on private financing finds that there are many viable means of offering candidates the opportunity to use public funds rather than private financing. ICPR has long supported public financing of elections, our proposal to offer public funds to judicial candidates was initially sponsored by then-Sen Barack Obama and has passed the Illinois Senate three times. We look forward to working with current sponsors Sen. Kwame Raoul and Sen. Kirk Dillard to craft a new bill along the lines of the Task Force report.
