World Business Chicago adopts new ethics policy

World Business Chicago, the agency that uses public and private money to promote the city to new businesses, said Friday its board has adopted an ethics policy to counter criticism about potential conflicts of interests.

One change is that the group will no longer advocate economic incentives for a particular company. Last summer, the city’s inspector general scolded World Business Chicago for campaigning for tax-increment financing deals for two companies represented on its board.

A Kane County assistant state’s attorney delivering a fresh review of the county’s ethics law Wednesday said several areas of the law that try to address conflicts of interest can’t be enforced.

And a couple of board members said the remaining parts of the law haven’t been implemented anyway.

 After a federal jury convicted former Gov. Rod Blagojevich of 17 felony counts of corruption, Blago’s former No. 2 stepped up to the microphones last week.

“This is a serious day for our state,” Gov. Pat Quinn said.

The convictions, Quinn continued, are a call for reformers to continue their efforts to root out government corruption.

Appointments to the newly reconstituted Niles Board of Ethics were approved in a split vote of village trustees that broke along gender lines last week after village trustees rejected those same appointees at their May meeting.

The new board approved last week consists of Village Trustee Jim Hynes, and Niles residents Randy Greco, Anthony Gaudio and Matthew Lagodzinski along with consulting attorney Michael Siegel, the only member carried over from the last board.
