'Consultant' to state Sen. Napoleon Harris cited in state ethics probe

SPRINGFIELD-The state's top ethics watchdog Wednesday accused a campaign consultant for state Sen. Napoleon Harris of misusing family leave time from his state job so he could do legislative campaign work.

State Executive Inspector General Ricardo Meza recommended that University Park resident Curtis Thompson be barred from future state employment because of his alleged actions.

A judge ruled Friday that prosecutors must stay on the case against McHenry County State's Attorney Louis Bianchi, rejecting their attempts to withdraw.

Special prosecutor Thomas McQueen had argued that because defense attorney Terry Ekl threatened to sue, alleging improper investigation and prosecution, he was ethically bound to withdraw — to avoid the appearance that he was influenced by a personal stake in the case.

The Illinois Executive Ethics Commission has fined the wife of a member of the Springfield School Board $500 for taking a campaign photo of her husband at the state building where she works.

The decision, dated May 18 and made public Monday, states that as a 20-year state employee, Shaun Stoutamyer “should be aware of the prohibition against engaging in political activities during State-compensated time.”

Nick Stoutamyer, Shaun’s husband, won his seat on the school board in 2009.

On a Friday morning nearly two weeks ago, 78-year-old Rita Cunat was riding the stationary bike in her bedroom when her telephone rang. 708-442-7500, Riverside Brookfield High School, flashed on her caller ID.

That's funny, Cunat thought. Her son graduated from RB more than 30 years ago and two of her granddaughters are recent graduates, but she had no one at the school now.

"I thought my granddaughters are gone from there, why are they calling me?" Cunat said.
