WASHINGTON — In November 2008, as President-elect Barack Obama began putting together his cabinet, reports emerged that he was considering nominating Penny Pritzker, the billionaire Hyatt Hotels heiress and businesswoman who had served as his chief campaign fund-raiser, as commerce secretary. But faced with awkward questions about her financial dealings, she declared that she did not want the nomination.

State Journal Register

When Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon was a kid, her father, the late Paul Simon, took government transparency so seriously that he disclosed what she made from her babysitting jobs on his financial disclosure form.

Simon’s plan to get the state’s politicians to disclose more about their financial affairs and entanglements doesn’t go that far (nor should it), but her initiative would be a welcome change over the trickle of information from today’s requirements.

April 5, 2012
Washington Post

By Tom Hamburger,

By Joseph Ryan, Chicago Tribune reporter

When a pair of political insiders set out to strike it rich in the strip club business, they picked a site in a middle-class suburb where one of them was close to the mayor.

Then they turned to organized crime associates and felons to help bankroll and run the enterprise. When it needed janitorial service, the club paid a firm founded by the suburb's mayor.

It isn’t often that “60 Minutes” pays a visit to this Illinois political backwater. And with senior correspondent Steve Kroft no less! Had it been Scott Pelley, we’d all have hung our heads in shame at the thought of having to endure all those Chicago Democratic machine sneers, taunts and giggles.

By Dane Placko, FOX Chicago News

Chicago - Residents of Chicago's 28th Ward say Ald. Jason Ervin's office in the 200 block of North Pulaski looks like a dump.

We walked in with a camera and found missing ceiling tiles, water stains, exposed wires and ducts, dangling extension cords, chips and cracks and stains on the floors, and a propane tank hiding in the corner.
