Paul Simon Fellows Respond to 2011 Blagojevich Verdit

The tenth day of jury deliberations resulted in the highly anticipated verdict of the re-trial of former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich. Speculation was put to rest when the jury returned finding Blagojevich guilty of seventeen of the eighteen counts decided, as the jury remained deadlocked on two counts. The former governor was found guilty in all eleven counts in relation to the attempt to sell Barack Obama's vacant Senate seat. These convictions come in addition to being found guilty of making false statements to the FBI, which he was convicted of in the first trial.

Tell Gov. Quinn to defend Illinois’ Freedom of Information Act!

In their final workdays in May, lawmakers in Springfield approved a rollback to the state’s open records law, known as the Freedom of Information Act. This important state law is designed to guarantee residents have access to government records – after all, they’re funded by you, the taxpayer!

But the bill that lawmakers approved – House Bill 1716 – would roll back the public’s ability to access records in a timely fashion.

Governments Lobbying State Government: 140 Local Governments and Public Agencies Spent Over $7.4 Million on Lobbying Contracts

In fiscal year 2010, local governments and public agencies in Illinois spent over $7.4 million to hire professionals in the art and science of influencing the governor, the General Assembly, and other state government officials.

CHICAGO – Local governments, transit agencies and other public bodies spent nearly $7.5 million in the last fiscal year on contracts with lobbyists hired to monitor and influence state officials, according to an annual survey conducted by the Illinois Campaign for Political Reform (ICPR).
