IL Malpractice Vote May Cost Judge His Job

The Chicago Tribune's recent editorial ("A disaster delayed," Editorial, July 8) correctly sounds the alarm about the coming higher medical-malpractice premiums in Illinois as a result of the Illinois Supreme Court's decision to strike down the state's medical-malpractice reform law.

For a lesson in how business ought to work, keep your eye on the insurance industry as it grapples with the Illinois Supreme Court's terrible decision on tort reform in medical-malpractice cases.

Back in February, the court threw out a solid law that capped non-economic damages, such as pain and suffering. Acting responsibly, the General Assembly had imposed limits of $500,000 in claims against doctors and $1 million in claims against hospitals.

Local doctors and a statewide watchdog group on Tuesday decried a decision this year by the Illinois Supreme Court that threw out caps on damages in medical malpractice cases.
