Candidate Claims He Was Offered Job to Drop Out of Race

Bridgeview, Ill. - A southwest side community activist who's running for State Senate says he was offered a state job and money to drop out of his political race, and he said that offer was secretly taped by the FBI.

Democrat Raul Montes Junior is running in the 12th District, a job that is also being pursued by incumbent 11th District Democrat Steve Landek, who is also the mayor of southwest suburban Bridgeview.

Appellate Justice Rodolfo “Rudy” Garcia accuses Cook County Democratic Party Chairman Joe Berrios of stacking the deck against him in next year’s election for appellate court.

Garcia said Berrios sent a message through an intermediary seven years ago that he wanted Garcia to rule a certain way in a case involving Berrios’ daughter. Garcia ruled the other way. Last month, the party endorsed Judge Jesse Reyes over Garcia for the appellate court.

A legal dispute between a political party and a state agency reveals how grossly incoherent our election law has become.

Laurel Lambert Schmidt of Riverside, who is running for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives from the state’s 3rd Congressional District, joined the Illinois Green Party in filing a lawsuit last month against the Illinois State Board of Elections. The board ruled that the Green Party does not qualify as an “established political party” for the 2012 elections.

SPRINGFIELD — Scott Lee Cohen had the signatures to demonstrate he deserved to be on the ballot.
 
In fact, he had 133,000 of them, five times the number required by law.

Cohen wheeled the 4-foot-high tower of nominating petitions on a dolly bound with screws and plywood into the Illinois State Board of Elections here, intimidating or preventing any challengers to stop his bid for office before it began.

Illinois congressional candidates can start collecting signatures after Labor Day to get on next year's ballot, and the signatures will count even if a Republican lawsuit challenging the new, Democrat-drawn district boundaries succeeds in changing them, a federal judge in Chicago ruled Friday.

A bill Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn signed aims to limit the chaotic nature of judicial candidate filings in Cook County.

Under the new law (Senate Bill 1586), candidates for judge will no longer be allowed to file for multiple races. Historically, the dozens of judicial candidates who run for office collect signatures and file in several races – a subcircuit, a countywide district, an appellate seat and so on – and then withdraw from all but one during the final stretch of the filing period.
